Except as otherwise provided by law, the pensions, annuities, or any other benefits accruing or accrued to any person under the provisions of this article and the accumulated contributions and the cash securities in the fund created under this act shall not be subject to garnishment, execution or attachment or to a legal process whatsoever and shall be unassignable.
